Framework for Using Intravenous Contrast in Nuclear Medicine

Learning Outcomes

After completing this course students should be able to:

  • Describe the legislative requirements relating to the prescription and administration of IV contrast agents in Nuclear Medicine departments and apply this knowledge to design compliant operating procedures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of understanding of their duty of care as professionals, using the principles underpinning structured assessment.

  • Learn how to manage adverse reactions to IV contrast media.
  • Demonstrate how to correctly document and investigate adverse reactions following IV contrast administration.
  • Understand appropriate contrast media storage conditions and follow correct disposal routes.
  • Understand different clinical indications where contrast enhanced CT in PET or SPECT can add value in patient management.
  • Recognise advantages and disadvantages of using contrast media and its impact in PET/CT or SPECT/CT departments.
  • Understand the importance of advice to patients, carers, and referrers.
  • Understand different imaging protocols used with contrast media and how to use them in conjunction with PET/CT or SPECT/CT.
  • Understand the principles underpinning the safe use of power injectors.
