NEW specific competencies for Clinical Scientists on the ‘Route 2’ pathway to registration have been published.

The Association of Clinical Scientists (ACS), as part of the introduction of new standards of proficiency for professions regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), is introducing its own updated competencies, which come into effect on 1 April.

IPEM had a working party which updated the specific competencies for medical physicists and clinical engineers under the ACS scheme, and members of the working party have commented on the specific competencies.

IPEM Fellow Fiammetta Fedele, a Consultant Medical Physicist and Head of Non-ionising radiation, said: 'I am very pleased this ACS review has given us an opportunity to review the guidelines for MPCE and bring them more in line with other routes to registration. Hopefully this will now contribute to strengthening workforce numbers and providing greater diversity in backgrounds within the profession.'

Catherine Humphreys, a Clinical Scientist in nuclear medicine, said: 'Additional guidance is now provided under each competency on what constitutes ‘Good Evidence’ for meeting the competencies.'
