Understanding Autism e-Learning

This e-Learning course is a comprehensive introduction to understanding autism which will develop your communication skills and increase your awareness of how the experience for service users with an autism diagnosis can be improved in healthcare. This training is available for purchase for a limited time until 14th January 2024.

About this course

This course has been commissioned by IPEM for IPEM members and has been developed by the Curly Hair Project Limited, an award-winning organisation founded by autistic author and entrepreneur Alis Rowe. The training is delivered through video resources narrated by Alis personally, who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 22, and includes animation, visuals and infographics and frequent reflective questions.

The training can be accessed at times which suit you best and completed at your own pace within your purchased access period, which is six months. You will also have the opportunity to post discussions with peers on the content of the training through IPEM’s Communities of Interest.

No prior experience or understanding of autism is required in order to complete the training.

Training Outcomes

This e-Learning course will allow learners to recognise the impact of an autism diagnosis on the service user and respond appropriately to their needs. Registrants for the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) are expected to meet the Standards of Proficiency and CPD Standards. This training will particularly support registrants with meeting:

  • Standard of Proficiency 5: Recognise the impact of culture, equality and diversity on practice and in a non-discriminatory and inclusive manner.
  • Standard of Proficiency 7: Communicate effectively.
  • CPD Standard 4: Seek to ensure that their CPD benefits the service user.

Medical Physicists and Clinical Engineers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments in practice and this training will encourage learners to begin considering how they can make reasonable adjustments within their practiced to improve the experience of service users with an autism diagnosis.

Additionally, this course is widely applicable and will provide an understanding of the communication needs of individuals with an autism diagnosis and allow learners to begin to reflect on how they can appropriately modify their means of communication to ensure all necessary information is communicated effectively and safely.
