Clinical Engineering Special Interest Group

Clinical Engineering (CE) is the application of science and technology in the design, creation, maintenance, and legislation of medical devices. This encompasses medical devices used in a vast range of environments, including (but not limited to) equipment used within hospital ward and theatre environments, home monitoring equipment, devices such as CPAP machines used in the home and community settings, assistive technologies such as communication aids etc. Clinical Engineers also work in close collaboration with other medical engineering professionals such as Rehabilitation Engineers as well as other medical professionals.

The Special Interest Group gets involved in a wide range of aspects of the field both clinically and in the research and innovation domains. The CE SIG offers support for Clinical Engineers in the field with policies, position statements, training and putting their voices forward.

Goals:

  • To create a programme of educational meetings and webinars
  • To monitor the impact of new technology in the field of Clinical Engineering
  • To help draft publications & legislation within the field of Clinical Engineering
  • To support communication and cooperation between members
  • To create a source of information accessible to Clinical Engineers
  • The assess and highlight problems within the field of Clinical Engineering

Current Interests:

  • Assess testing policies and ensure standardisation across NHS
  • Check and update standards and other relevant documentation
  • Increasing awareness of Clinical Engineering as a field of excellence
  • Assess NHS systems and policies
  • Engage with other SIGs through collaborative events and activities

Events for 2024:

  • Global Clinical Engineering Day – 21st October (annually)

The members of the CE SIG, who organise these activities, are IPEM volunteers who meet several times a year.  If you want to join the committee, follow the "Volunteer for IPEM" link below and read the role description.

The committee shares its work and knowledge via an online Community of Interest, which is open to everyone with an interest in the subject area. If you follow the link below you can join for free.  This online platform also has a list of the SIG committee members.
