Inspiring IPEM member appointed to national fellowship programme to encourage women in science

AN inspiring scientist has been appointed to a prestigious national scheme to encourage the next generation of female scientists.

IPEM member Zoe Clarke, Environmental Controls Lead, Assistive Technology Clinical Specialist at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is just one of four recipients of this year’s Chief Scientific Officer’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Fellowship scheme.

The programme, which was launched in conjunction with International Women’s Day last year, attracted more than 50 applications this time from female healthcare scientists and the four selected will act as role models to inspire the next generation of scientists.

The WISE Fellowship Programme is a bespoke 12-month initiative, in partnership with WISE – a campaign for gender balance in science, technology and engineering.

The Fellowship includes a career development programme, providing mentoring support, communication and leadership skills training starting in September 2017. In addition to allocated training, activity and network days, the fellows will attend both the WISE and Chief Scientific Officer conferences.

Professor Sue Hill OBE, Chief Scientific Officer for England, said the initiative was a unique opportunity to inspire the next generation of female healthcare scientists to gain leadership experience and showcase the wide variety of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) based careers within the NHS.

She said: ‘I am proud to announce the Fellows who now have the opportunity to inspire the next generation of female scientists.  In recognition of the importance of science and innovation in addressing global health challenges, we have been working with WISE to create this fellowship scheme and support an aim of getting one million more women working in the UK STEM workforce.’

IPEM member Dr Charlotte Kemp, Principal Clinical Scientist at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in Middlesbrough, was one of the first recipients of the WISE Fellowship scheme last year.
