President's Update July 2026
Working for You - Celebrating Our Impact and Investing in our Members
As we move through the summer, I wanted to share a few updates that highlight the progress IPEM is making on behalf of our professions. From celebrating our collective impact, to recognising our volunteers, making Fellowship more accessible and encouraging new ideas, each reflects our commitment to putting members at the heart of everything we do.
Celebrating Our Collective Impact
This month we're launching our new IPEM Impact animation, showcasing the difference our members, volunteers and staff make every day.
The animation reminds us that, by working together through IPEM, we can achieve far more than any one organisation could alone. I hope you'll take a couple of minutes to watch it and share it with colleagues. It's a great reminder of what we can achieve together.
Listening to Our Volunteers
Our volunteers are central to everything IPEM achieves, so it's always encouraging to hear directly about their experiences.
Our annual Volunteer Survey provided valuable insight into the experiences of our volunteers, and the feedback was very positive. Around 90% of respondents feel their volunteering makes a positive impact, 91% feel appreciated by the National Office, and 91% found the application process straightforward. More volunteers also intend to continue volunteering, while induction and onboarding continue to improve.
Most encouragingly, volunteers rated their experience as increasingly positive. Our Net Promoter Score has increased from 13.6 in 2025 to 28.4 in 2026, reflecting the positive changes we've made to strengthen the volunteer experience.
The survey also highlighted where we need to keep improving. Balancing volunteer commitments alongside professional responsibilities remains the biggest challenge, while respondents also raised understandable concerns about the National Office restructure and organisational capacity. We'll continue listening and responding as we move forward.
My thanks go to every volunteer who gives their time, expertise and enthusiasm to IPEM. Everything we achieve depends on your commitment.
Making Fellowship More Accessible
We've also approved a refreshed approach to IPEM Fellowship.
Fellowship is IPEM's highest grade of membership, recognising those who have made an outstanding contribution to the profession. Following member feedback, we've refreshed the guidance, broadened how excellence can be demonstrated and removed one of the biggest practical barriers by allowing senior professional colleagues – not just existing Fellows - to act as referees where appropriate.
Importantly, the standard has not changed. We hope these changes encourage more outstanding members from across medical physics, clinical engineering and clinical technology to seek the recognition they deserve.
Supporting New Ideas
One of IPEM's greatest strengths is the willingness of members to shape the future of our professions.
To support this, the Science, Technology and Engineering Committee (STEC) is reviewing a new approach to establishing Task and Finish Groups. Starting this September, we’re introducing short monthly online sessions, where members can present ideas directly to STEC, enabling quicker decisions, greater transparency and stronger engagement.
Looking Ahead
Each of these updates has a common theme - supporting members to make an even greater impact.
Whether through volunteering, professional recognition, influencing national policy or bringing forward new ideas, IPEM is strongest when its members are actively involved.
