Championing Clinical Technologist Registration

IPEM has been given the opportunity to submit evidence as part of a formal renewal process being undertaken by the Professional Standards Authority in the coming months on the RCT (Register of Clinical Technologists). Currently this is a voluntary register, which provides professional recognition and sets standards of practice, but does not offer the same level of assurance or enforceable oversight as statutory regulation.

This recent development provides an important and timely opportunity to demonstrate clearly where the current arrangements may not go far enough in protecting patients and the public.

Clinical Technologists play a critical role across healthcare science, supporting the safe operation, maintenance and quality assurance of complex technologies. As services evolve and technology becomes more advanced, the need for consistent standards, clear accountability and robust oversight is increasingly important.

This work is not simply about professional recognition. It is about ensuring that the right safeguards are in place to support patient safety, system assurance and public confidence. IPEM is leading the development of a focused, evidence-based case, working closely with partners and engaging stakeholders across the system. Our approach is deliberately targeted, focusing on where risks exist and where current mechanisms may not fully address them.

This is a significant opportunity to strengthen the case for change. We will continue to keep members updated as this work progresses.
