Volunteer Bios

Below are bios for the volunteers who've helped to produce the content of this course. A special thanks to them for their contribution.

Stephen Payne:

Stephen Payne is the current Editor-in-Chief of the IPEM journal Medical Engineering and Physics. He is also Professor in the School of Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol and a Visiting Professor at National Taiwan University, Taiwan. He has published 3 books and more than 170 journal papers in international journals.

Mohammad Al-Amri:

Frank Verhaegen:

Frank Verhaegen heads the Physics Research Division at MAASTRO Clinic (Netherlands) and has also been full professor at the University of Maastricht since 2009. He is the editor of four books on Monte Carlo methods in radiotherapy, and 4D ultrasound imaging. The research from his teams has resulted in 300+ papers in leading journals in technology development for radiation research. He has held numerous research grants and collaborates extensively with the medical and biomedical industry, which has resulted in patents and commercial products.

Judith Dineley:

Judith Dineley is a postdoctoral research associate at King’s College London. She now works in health applications of speech processing, with a focus on mental health, in the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience. She has a PhD in Doppler ultrasound and has previously worked clinically in radiation oncology in the UK, Ireland and Australia.

Adesola Ademiloye:

Dr Adesola Ademiloye is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director in Biomedical Engineering at Swansea University. He is an accomplished academic leader with expertise in computational (bio)mechanics, numerical modelling, and digital engineering. His work reflects a strong commitment to curriculum innovation, technology-enhanced learning, and equitable academic practice.

Dr Ademiloye has an extensive record of research publications, mentorship, and professional service, including roles as co-editor of international conference proceedings, guest associate editor, peer reviewer, and editorial board member for leading journals. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he exemplifies inclusive leadership and a dedication to excellence within UK higher education.

Daniel Espino:

Dr Daniel Espino is an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering, and is both a Chartered Biologist and a Chartered Engineer. Daniel has published around 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and a book chapter in the field of Biomedical Engineering, focusing primarily on connective tissues across the body. He has received funding from EPSRC, the EU and the British Heart Foundation. He has been invited to give seminars, talks and demonstrate research at international meetings in Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Switzerland, USA and the UK.

Marisa Sargent:

Dr Marisa Sargent completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in 2023, specialising in rehabilitation engineering. Her work sits at the intersection of biology and mechanics, exploring how the body’s soft tissues, in particular skeletal muscles, respond to load bearing through movement or external loading. She is part of the VIVO project, a multidisciplinary team from multiple universities that develops soft robotic devices to support an ageing population. Her research focuses on understanding how these devices interact with the human body, combining biological, physiological, and biomechanical perspectives - from the behaviour of individual cells all the way up to whole-limb movement.

Marisa also previously worked as an editor at Wiley, where she contributed to leading scientific journals including Small and Advanced Functional Materials. This experience has given her a broad perspective on cutting-edge research across bioengineering and materials science.
