In September 2026, Mark Knight will reach the mid-point of his Presidency and Anna Barnes will complete her term as Immediate Past President. IPEM will therefore appoint a new President-Elect at the 2026 Annual General Meeting.
This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the UK’s most influential healthcare science organisations and to champion the impact of medical physics and clinical engineering across healthcare, research and innovation.
IPEM plays a vital role in supporting professionals who design, deliver and advance the technologies and scientific expertise that underpin modern healthcare. At a time of rapid technological change and increasing demand on health systems, the voice of our profession has never been more important.
IPEM President Elect - A Leadership Role for the Profession
IPEM Presidents play a key role in shaping the direction of the Institute and representing the profession nationally and internationally.
Working alongside the Board of Trustees, dedicated volunteers and the National Office team, the President helps guide the strategic priorities of the Institute and champion the contribution of healthcare science to patient care, innovation and research.
The role also involves engaging with partners across healthcare, academia, industry and government to strengthen the visibility and influence of medical physics and clinical engineering.
The role forms part of a four-year leadership journey:
1 year as President-Elect
2 years as President
1 year as Immediate Past President
This structure allows the President to contribute to the Institute’s leadership over an extended period, supporting continuity and strategic development.
A unique opportunity
Serving as President of IPEM is both a privilege and an opportunity.
Those who have held the role often reflect on the unique chance it provides to:
- influence the future direction of the profession
- represent the contribution of healthcare science to society
- work alongside inspiring colleagues across clinical practice, academia and industry
- support the next generation of medical physicists and clinical engineers.
It is a role that combines leadership, advocacy and community — helping ensure that the professions represented by IPEM continue to thrive and evolve.
Who Should Apply?
We are keen to hear from IPEM Fellows who:
- are passionate about the future of the profession
- want to contribute to the strategic leadership of the Institute
- are committed to supporting IPEM’s members and advancing healthcare science.
Candidates should bring a clear vision for the profession and the enthusiasm to represent IPEM and its community across the UK and beyond.
Application Process
Applications are invited from eligible Fellows of IPEM. We warmly encourage eligible Fellows with a passion for advancing the profession and supporting IPEM’s mission to consider applying.
The Board of Trustees will review all applications against the role criteria. If more than one candidate meets the essential requirements, a ballot will be held among voting members of the Institute.
