Dr Fiammetta Fedele PhD CSci Hon FAHCS FIPEM ARCR MBMUS MBAD, BSI Committee Member

I am Head of Clinical Physics and Clinical Engineering at Barts Health NHS Trust, one of the largest NHS organisations in the UK. A Fellow of IPEM since 2023, I am also an Honorary Fellow of the Academy for Healthcare Science, recognising my significant national contribution to science, innovation and professional leadership. I am a senior healthcare leader with over 13 years’ experience in management, including regional leadership roles across South East London, as Lead Scientist for the Imaging Network.

My background spans clinical practice, research and academic leadership within medical physics, with particular expertise in non-ionising radiation and ultrasound. Prior to joining Barts Health, I was Consultant Medical Physicist and Head of Non-Ionising Radiation at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, leading the transformation of multidisciplinary ultrasound services and quality assurance systems. My work has consistently combined service delivery with innovation, including leading imaging research and development strategy and fostering collaboration across clinical, academic and commercial partners.

Alongside my NHS leadership career, I have supported research delivery as a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Research Delivery Lead (2017–2025) and continue to contribute to academia as an Honorary Senior Lecturer and Module Lead at King’s College London. My portfolio reflects a sustained commitment to integrating clinical services, research, education and workforce development at scale.

I have been a long-standing volunteer within IPEM, beginning in 2013 as Secretary of the Ultrasound and Non-Ionising Radiation Special Interest Group.  I have since held senior roles including Deputy Director and now Director of the Science, Technology and Engineering Committee (STEC). I have been an IPEM Trustee since 2024, a member of the Member Advisory and Prioritisation Council, and serve as Board lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.

I’m deeply committed to fostering a culture that respects and values diversity. This is reflected in my professional engagement, including being featured in a special edition of Scope for International Women’s Day, contributing to a cross-generational debate on gender equity. I’m passionate about promoting STEM careers to those who may not have been exposed to science and about demystifying the profession for the public.

I’m a member of the Future Skills Commission and passionate about shaping the future workforce. I advocate for inclusive career pathways, diverse approaches to learning, apprenticeships, and knowledge transfer across the NHS, research institutions and commercial partners to build a sustainable and adaptable workforce.

I see the role of President Elect as a natural progression in my leadership journey at a pivotal time for the profession. I believe physics and engineering in medicine remain under-recognised despite being central to the NHS 10-Year Plan and Life Sciences Strategy, and I am passionate about strengthening IPEM’s role as a visible, credible and influential advocate.

I am particularly motivated to support IPEM in evolving into a more agile and outward-looking organisation while maintaining its core values. I will bring a collaborative, diplomatic and values-driven leadership style, strategic insight, integrity and a strong commitment to inclusion, positioning IPEM for a future of greater influence, innovation and collective voice.

Dr Fiametta Fidele talks about what she will bring to IPEM as President Elect if elected.
