IPEM's Voice

We are committed to making the voice of the MPCE community heard through IPEM.

IPEM actively engages with the UK Government, devolved administrations and other policymakers, such as regulatory bodies, to advocate on behalf of the MPCE community.

Government Impact

Since the start of 2024, IPEM has had over 20 questions asked in Parliament about our profession.

We are responding to more consultations, calls for evidence and engagement exercises than ever before.

With the expert help of our members these have included;

  • NHS 10 Year Plan,
  • National Cancer Plan,
  • UK Spending Review,
  • NHS Workforce Plan
  • Review of the National School of Healthcare Science

We are also engaging with Parliamentary Committees, submitting evidence to an inquiry into post 16 skills including apprenticeships, for example, and meeting with members of the Science, Innovation & Technology and Education & Skills Select Committees.

We hosted a major event in Westminster on the Grand Challenges in Healthcare Science.

The packed meeting was addressed by the Chief Scientific Officer for England, IPEM’s President and the Chair of our Clinical Engineering Special Interest Group. The event, in partnership with the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee, was attended by numerous Parliamentarians, experts and professionals.

As a result, IPEM was invited to contribute to research by the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology.

We published a Manifesto for the Future of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering ahead of the 2024 General Election.

This was sent to relevant Ministers following the election and has been used widely to promote our five key asks:

  1. Address to MPCE workforce crisis
  2. Introduce statutory registration for all Clinical Technologists
  3. Create the capacity for UK generation of medical radionuclides
  4. Ensure AI is deployed in the interests of patients
  5. Ensure environmental sustainability for future generations by investing in the long term.

We supported World Cancer Day, in partnership with Radiotherapy UK, to promote support for radiotherapy services

Over the past decade, 500,000 cancer patients have waited too long for treatment. Urgent change is needed now to avoid another decade of unacceptable waiting times and poor outcomes.

We’ve been actively engaging across the UK to strengthen the voice of the MPCE community and influence national healthcare policy. Our work has included meeting with Scotland’s Chief Scientific Officer to contribute to the Scottish Healthcare Science Strategy, and responding to Welsh Government consultations on standards, safety, and workforce development. We’ve proudly sponsored the Advancing Healthcare Awards at both UK and regional levels—in Wales and Northern Ireland—promoting IPEM’s role as the leading UK-wide body for medical physics and clinical engineering. Additionally, we’ve provided expert commentary on key national policy announcements, including the NHS 10-Year Plan and the Government’s Spending Review.

We continue to work in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders across our sector for the greater benefit of our profession and wider society.
