Ultrasound Imaging

This Ultrasound Imaging course is part of a series of courses organised by the Joint Department of Physics of The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and The Institute of Cancer Research, London.

This course is designed to provide the necessary physics background that underpins medical ultrasound imaging. It includes a complete introduction to the fundamentals of ultrasound, physics and imaging system principles, bio-effects and safety of diagnostic ultrasound, quality assurance of ultrasound devices and fields of medical application and research. The course is run over three days (Tuesday to Thursday) and includes a combination of lectures, hands-on sessions illustrating basic ultrasound measurements and quality assurance.

As well as being useful for new entrants to the medical physics profession working towards a professional qualification, it would also be of benefit to postgraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, industry-based physicists, and registered clinical scientists wishing to re-establish their understanding of ultrasound physics.

Provisional lecture list

  • Physical principles of ultrasound
  • Engineering principles of ultrasound
  • Bioeffects and safety
  • Quality assurance of diagnostic devices
  • Fields of application

The next course runs from 10th - 12th November 2026. Registration closes on 23rd October 2026.
