Ultrasound and Non Ionising Radiation Special Interest Group
“Non-Ionising Radiation (NIR) refers to electromagnetic radiation that lacks the energy to ionise atoms, including ultraviolet light, visible light, infrared, microwaves, and radio waves. Medical ultrasound, which uses high-frequency sound waves, is also classified as non-ionising radiation. While Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is also non-ionising, it is covered by its own group: the MRSIG.
The Ultrasound and Non-Ionising Radiation Special Interest Group (UNIRSIG) brings together professionals interested in the safe and effective use of non-ionising radiation technologies in medicine. Our remit includes supporting clinical use, advising on quality assurance programmes, and providing guidance on the governance of these technologies. We also address safety, research, regulatory compliance, and education for all applications of NIR in healthcare.
The UNIRSIG is run by dedicated IPEM volunteers who are passionate about the role of non-ionising radiation in healthcare. We welcome applications from anyone interested in this dynamic field to join us, contribute to our activities, and shape the future of non-ionising radiation in medicine.”
