Quality Improvement in Radiotherapy

This in person event will be a focussed day where attendees are provided with case studies, examples and interactive discussions of how to implement QI within radiotherapy so that they can take these back to their own centres.

Organised by IPEM's Radiotherapy Special Interest Group

Given the current environment of sustained financial pressures on health services and a sub-optimal radiotherapy utilization rate in the UK, there is a need to ensure high quality radiotherapy is delivered efficiently and safely. Quality Improvement tools and methodologies can be used to support risk management, ensure efficient application and as evidence of efficacy of innovations and improvement within radiotherapy.

Quality improvement has become part of the syllabus for physicists training for STP and HSST but little discussion has been held nationally. Furthermore the clinical use of formal methods of QI in radiotherapy practice is not commonplace with limited literature available on QI practice within UK radiotherapy. The need for QI is clearly defined in the new MPACE requirements and its efficacy is well established in wider healthcare settings and countries.

This meeting aims to provide support and learning for IPEM members and non-member colleagues looking to carry out QI within their departments and establish a wider community specifically for QI within radiotherapy.

Topics to be covered include:
- Process mapping and redesign
- Change management and rapid improvement events
- QI tools
