Dr. Paul Doolan, German Oncology Center in Limassol, Cyprus
Dr. Paul Doolan is the Director of AI and Medical Physicist at the German Oncology Center in Limassol, Cyprus. He serves on several AI and radiotherapy-focused working groups, including with IPEM, ESTRO, and EFOMP, and is a Commissioning Editor for the IPEM SCOPE journal.
After working as a Medical Physicist in the UK NHS, he completed a PhD at University College London and undertook a sabbatical at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, focusing on proton therapy. He returned to clinical practice at UCLH before joining the German Oncology Center in 2017 and led the Medical Physics Department between 2020-2025. Since early 2025 he has been responsible for setting up the region’s first AI Department, which oversees all AI deployments across the hospital. He is dedicated to improving patient care through innovation.
Dr. Sofia Michopoulou, University Hospital Southampton NHS FT
Dr. Sofia Michopoulou is a Consultant Clinical Scientist, Head of Nuclear Medicine Physics and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Southampton. In her clinical role, Sofia leads a team of scientists supporting and developing radionuclide therapy and diagnostic SPECT/CT and PET/CT services. She teaches at BSc, MSc and FRCR and supervises PhD students. Her research focuses on the development and evaluation of imaging biomarkers for disease characterisation and the use of artificial intelligence for diagnosis support. Her latest project, supported by an NIHR Senior Clinical Research Practitioner Award evaluates AI technology for amyloid PET imaging to improve patient stratification for treatment of Alzheimer’s.
Richard Meades, The Royal Free London NHS FT
Richard leads the provision of medical physics expertise for one of the largest radionuclide therapy services in the NHS. He has 20 years of clinical and research experience in diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine, radiation protection, national and international clinical trials, and has held several honorary academic lecturing positions. Active in the development and implementation of AI in healthcare, Richard has published peer review publications and professional magazine articles in this area. He founded and was the inaugural chair of IPEM’s AI group, is a member of the EFOMP AI SIG Steering Committee and the AXREM AI Special Focus Group. In addition, he has been an invited conference speaker and lectures on AI and has sat on national conference Scientific Organising Committees/Steering Groups to advise on and curate their AI content.
