Clinical Technologists Training, The RCT
The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) offers a Clinical Technologist Training Scheme, the aims of which are to provide:
a robust, externally validated education and training framework for clinical technologists;
a means to recognise formal clinical technologist training, within the core scopes of practice, ensuring a workforce fit to practice
a means to achieve registration on the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT); and
a means for clinical technologists practicing outside of the core scopes of practice to achieve an IPEM diploma in clinical technology.
Full details of the scheme can be found in the IPEM Clinical Technologists Training Scheme Handbook here.
To join the IPEM training scheme an applicant must first be employed as a Trainee Clinical Technologist in an IPEM Accredited Training Centre. For details of these training centres, please click here.
To apply for the IPEM training scheme, applicants should liaise with the Training Co-ordinator of their training centre in order to complete the application form here. A copy of the applicant's academic qualifications should also be provided with the application form together with a training plan and the training centre's competency list for the Scopes of Practice.
Applicants for the IPEM training scheme are also required to apply for Associate Membership of IPEM via a separate application form. Associate Membership is free for the duration of the training scheme. Applicants should ensure that they tick the appropriate boxes on page 1 stating that they are a trainee clinical technologist. The membership application form should be returned together with the training scheme application form.
There are two intakes each year - in April and October - and applications must be received by the end of March and September respectively to be included in the requested intake. Applications not submitted at these times will be held until the next available intake. Induction days are held in May and November for new trainees and vivas are held in May and November with portfolio submission dates in March and September.
Every trainee on the IPEM training scheme is allocated two moderators: an external moderator and a supporting moderator. For more information on these roles please see page 10 in the Handbook and visit our IPEM Moderators page here.
All applications are subject to a single fee and for the 2021 cohort, this is £640.00 and covers a maximum training period of 24 months. Any trainees requiring an extension to this training period will need to re-apply to the scheme and an additional rolling six month pro-rata fee will be payable.
