The use of bioimpedance in patients with kidney disease

3 July 2015

Organised by IPEM's Physiological Measurement Special Interest Group

Co-sponsored by the BDA Renal Nutrition Specialist Group

Kidney disease results in diminished capacity for the body to regulate fluid status, amongst other things. The build-up of excess fluid is associated with significant cardiovascular risk and also makes it difficult to assess changes in body weight. As such, accurate measurement of fluid status is of great importance but has historically been based on clinical assessments that are known to be inadequate. Bioimpedance has long had applications in measurement of body composition and fluid status in this patient group, but recent advances in technology and methods of analysing impedance data have seen the technology move out of the research setting and into routine practice.

This meeting aims to bring together the many groups who have a role in ensuring the best use of this technology to improve patient care. This includes researchers, industry and clinical groups such as nurses, dietitians and physicians. It is hoped that the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field, discuss different applications of bioimpedance and exchange experiences and ideas will help to address the needs of those developing and using bioimpedance for the care of patients with kidney disease.

Target audience
1. People with interest in bioimpedance technology
2. People with interest in fluid management in patients with renal failure
