Professor Mark Tooley FREng was Head of the Department of Medical Physics & Bioengineering and Director of Research and Development at the Royal United Hospitals in Bath until 2017.  Mark has a BSc in Electronic Engineering from the University of Bath, sponsored by industry, and an MSc in Medical Electronics and Physics from the University of London, and a PhD in biophysics, also from the University of London. His PhD was the co-invention (with a cardiologist) of an original method for rate-independent diagnosis of cardiac rhythm for implantable devices. Mark has worked in Medical Physics and Bioengineering since 1980 at various NHS and academic institutions (including St Bartholomew’s Hospital and Medical School,  Bristol University and University Hospitals Bristol, of Bath hospitals and University).  He is a registered Consultant Clinical Scientist, an Honorary Professor with the University of Bath and a Visiting Professor with the University of the West of England. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Scientist. He is a Fellow of: The Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, the Institute of Physics,  the Royal College of Physicians, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.  He is a member of the EPSRC peer review panel, and a recent member of their Healthcare Technology Strategic Advisory Team.  He was a recent member of the Royal Society fellowship panel.  He is currently a member of the Royal Academy of Engineering policy committee, their membership committee, and their panel for biomedical engineering. Mark’s interests include  innovations in medicine, physics applications in anaesthesia, simulation and modelling in medicine, physiological measurement, biological signal processing, blood pressure measurement, novel patient monitoring solutions, and mentoring.  Mark is listed in Who’s Who.
