Transferring CSci Registration: IOP to IPEM

IOP Members and Fellows who, until recently have held the CSci designation, awarded by IOP on behalf of the Science Council, can still maintain their CSci award, if they wish, following IOP’s decision to give up its licence to award CSci, by transferring to the IPEM section of the CSci register.

The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) has approaching 1,100 CSci registrants on its section of the register.  MIPEM is the benchmark qualification for CSci registration and MIPEM is normally awarded upon the demonstration of higher education and competences at Masters and Chartered level (e.g. CPhys, CSci,. CEng, etc.)

There are three groups of IOP members who can benefit from the transfer arrangements IPEM has put in place:

Existing dual members of IOP and IPEM

If you are already MInstP or FInst P and CSci, and already MIPEM or FIPEM, transferring your CSci is easy and can be done by simply emailing a request to transfer.

IOP members working in applications of physics or engineering to medicine or biology

If you are already MInstP or FInstP and CSci, but not a member of IPEM you can join IPEM as MIPEM under the fast-track acceptance scheme, (if you are working in applications of physics or engineering to medicine and biology), and transfer your CSci registration at the same time.  The fast track acceptance scheme is an IPEM addition to the IOP-IPEM Dual Membership Scheme, which gives members of both organisations a 25% discount on each annual membership subscription, at renewal on request.  In addition IOP members who join IPEM as dual members receive an additional 25% discount on the MIPEM subscription only, for the first two years.

Details and an abbreviated application form is available here

IOP members working in other areas of Physics

The Science Council’s Registration Authority has agreed that IOP members who are not qualified for MIPEM, because they are not applying physics to medicine or biology, can transfer their CSci registration to IPEM provided they join IPEM in the Affiliate category of membership.  IPEM Affiliate is a low-cost membership for those interested in IPEM as a source of information and services, but who are not working in applications of physics or engineering to medicine or biology.  The same dual-membership-scheme discounts available to other membership categories also apply to Affiliates.  Download an application form here.

Registration Fees and Membership Subscriptions

IPEM collects the annual CSci registration fee, £20 from 2012, and passes this to the Science Council, without any administration surcharge.

For 2012 the UK subscription fee for MIPEM is £74 and for Affiliate is £27, before dual membership discounts.  The 2012 subscription covers new members joining in November and December 2011.

Affiliates receive fewer mailings and services than other membership categories but what they do receive is relevant to their interests and needs as deduced by membership profiling. Higher charges (+£8) apply to members overseas to cover additional postage costs.
