CHRISTIE MEDICAL PHYSICS AND ENGINEERING

£37,996 - £45,596 per annum

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated physicist to join the Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation Protection (DRRP) Group of Christie Medical Physics and Engineering (CMPE), based at The Christie in Manchester.  The successful applicant will join a group of 11 physicists and 9 medical technologists providing scientific and radiation safety support for diagnostic radiology, ultraviolet radiation (UV) and lasers to both NHS and private healthcare facilities in the North West of England. Our customer base includes 14 acute NHS trusts, 7 private hospitals, 5 breast screening centres and a large number of community dental services.

You will take an active role in providing scientific support to diagnostic radiology departments and will take the lead for an area of the group’s work, (e.g. mammography, CT, etc) dependent on your past experience and interests and the group’s needs. You will be expected to provide in-depth expertise in this area, developing new ways of working and implementing these into the routine procedures of the group. In addition, you will act as the lead Medical Physics Expert for specified Trusts dealing with all aspects of the use of X-ray equipment.

CMPE is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive as an RPA body under the requirements of IRR99.  In addition to your MPE role, you will be involved in the RPA body, providing radiation protection advice to diagnostic radiology departments and will be the lead RPA for specified Trusts.

You will initiate and undertake projects to support clinical research and service development within diagnostic radiology. The group is active in clinical research and service development, currently working on projects in dosimetry and image quality assessment for interventional radiology, breast density assessment in mammography and the use of dental cone beam CT.

You will have experience of providing medical physics support to diagnostic radiology and have demonstrated an ability to undertake research and/or service development. Applicants must hold HPC registration as a Clinical Scientist and RPA accreditation would be advantageous. Applicants with limited experience post registration may be considered for appointment at Band 7. A current driving licence is also essential, as the duties will require regular travel to other hospitals in the region.
