Clinical Scientist in Radiotherapy Physics
Band 7 Ref: 218-SR-AHP-884
Department of Clinical Physics and Bioengineering
£30,460 to £40,157 pa - Fixed Term 2 Years

Applications are sought from enthusiastic physicists to work in the Arden Cancer Centre at the University Hospital in Coventry. The Centre has five Elekta megavoltage machines with MLC and EPID, delivering 6MV, 25MV and 4MeV to 20MeV beams. Step and shoot IMRT is being delivered for appropriate Head and Neck patients and there is an active program to develop IMRT both technically and clinically at the Centre as well as research into adaptive treatment. Plans are underway to provide Cone Beam CT and VMAT on two accelerators. CT and gated CT, MRI and PET imaging and Prosoma virtual simulation along with standard simulation with single  slice CT  is available. Dose prediction is done with the XVplan open platform and XIO planning systems. There is one Gulmay 250kV orthovoltage unit and a dedicated 5MeV Betatron for Total Skin Electrons. Brachytherapy is provided with iridium implants and a Nucletron HDR unit. Unsealed Source therapy is also provided by the Radiotherapy Physics Section which has 10 scientist and 14 technical staff with two technician trainees, one in Dosimetry and one in Engineering. The section is one part of the Department of Clinical Physics and Bioengineering. A Team Briefing management system ensures that contributions from all staff are sought and valued.

The successful candidate will work on all routine aspects of the service as well as specialised work and service development. Routine aspects include treatment planning, machine QC, unsealed source therapy and Brachytherapy, ensuring that a broad range of expertise is developed and maintained.

For this post a keen interest and motivation in computing and image processing is required.

There is an active research and development programme supported by enthusiastic clinicians and linked to the local universities. This provides opportunities to supervise and participate in undergraduate and postgraduate projects and if appropriate register for a higher degree.

The Centre is located on the University Hospital site at Walsgrave which is on the edge of historic Coventry with convenient transport to the City and easy access to rural Warwickshire, the M6 and the M69 motorways.
