Associate Membership

Associate Membership is open to persons employed in a physical science applied to medicine or biological engineering, or a related biological or medical science, who have an academic qualification acceptable to Council. When an Associate Member becomes eligible for Corporate or Incorporated Membership, or Medical Membership, s/he ceases to be an Associate Member and is required forthwith to notify the Honorary Secretary and may apply for Corporate or Incorporated Membership, or Medical Membership, in accordance with these Rules.

Guidelines for Applicants

Applicants for Associate Membership will have entered the profession:

  • as trainee Clinical Scientists and Engineers and are, therefore, following the Basic Training Scheme to qualify for the Dip.IPEM or are engaged in PATR
    OR
  • in specialist posts which do not require the same breadth and depth of training and experience required of a fully qualified clinical scientist or engineer
    OR
  • as junior or trainee Clinical Technologists to obtain relevant qualifications training and experience
    OR
  • in technical posts which do not require the same breadth and depth of training and experience required of a fully qualified clinical technologist, which may include those eligible for registration with the Engineering Council as Engineering Technicans (Eng Tech).

Applications for Associate Membership must be proposed by two Fellows, Corporate Members or Incorporated Members.  Each proposer will be approached for a reference and must, therefore, have a knowledge of the candidate.

All Associate Membership applications will be assessed initially by the Membership and Training Manager.  If it is clear that the written application together with references meets all the criteria, then Associate Membership will be awarded under the Authority of the Chairman of the Membership Panel.  If there are doubts at initial assessment, the Chairman of the Membership Panel or a nominee will review the application and make a decision, after seeking clarification in writing or verbally, if appropriate.  Applicants whose aplications are unsuccessful may request guidance from the Membership and Training Manager about actions they must take to ensure a future application is successful.

Application for Engineering Technician (Eng Tech) registration
The Institute is licensed by the Engineering Council (UK) to award registration as an Engineering Technican (EngTech) to those who meet the qualifying criteria.  Associate Members who do not yet meet the competence requirements for Incorporated membership and, therefore, registration as an Incorporated Engineer, may qualify for EngTech registratation, and may make a separate application.
