The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine is the leading professional body in the physical sciences and engineering sector of healthcare science in the United Kingdom. It is also believed to be the longest-established professional body in the world for medical physics, founded in 1943 as the Hospital Physicists' Association. The present Institute is the result of a merger with the Biological Engineering Society, founded in 1960, and a further merger with the Association of Medical Technologists, founded as the Hospital Physics Technicians' Association in 1952. It provides for the professional needs of physical scientists, engineers and technologists working in a wide range of specialties, which include:
- Biomaterials
- Biomechanics
- Bioprocess Engineering
- Clinical Engineering and Equipment Management
- Diagnostic Radiology
- Health Informatics and Computing
- Non-Ionising Radiation
|
- Magnetic Resonance
- Nuclear Medicine
- Physiological Measurement
- Radiation Protection
- Radiotherapy Physics
- Rehabilitation Engineering
- Ultrasound
|
This list is by no means exhaustive and the Institute can meet the professional needs of anyone working in physical sciences or engineering applied to medicine and biology, whether they are working with applications of existing technology or engaged in the development of new technologies.
Overseas Affiliate is a membership category specially designed for physicists, engineers and technologists whose work relates to healthcare, who are outside the United Kingdom and are members of a relevant national society or professional body in their own country.
IPEM Rule, C:10, clearly shows that this new membership category is not established to compete with other national memberships, but to be complementary to them:
" C:10 Overseas Affiliateship is open to individual members of national medical physics organisations or national organisations for medical and biological engineering outside the United Kingdom. Overseas Affiliateship is intended for scientists and engineers who have had their professional standing recognised by their national organisations but who wish to enjoy international networking opportunities and membership benefits offered by the Institute without application for Incorporated or Corporate Membership and assessment in accordance with Rules C:4 and C:5. "
ELIGIBILITY: Anyone who has received professional education and training in the UK and who has the right to reside and work in the UK, but has chosen to work overseas, is not eligible to join IPEM as an Overseas Affiliate.
They should apply to be an Associate Member, Incorporated Member (IIPEM) or Corporate Member (MIPEM), according to eligibility.
Benefits
Membership Benefits open to Overseas Affiliates include:
- 30% IPEM members' discount on IPEM Publications
- IPEM Members' discount for registration at scientific meetings (usually 25%)
- SCOPE, the Institute's free journal for members, published every three months
- 10% discount on job vacancy advertisements placed directly by your department (not through advertising agencies) in the PSC, IPEM's fortnightly circular for jobs in medical physics and clinical engineering and technology.
IPEM Members' personal subscription [i] rates for:
- Medical Engineering and Physics, [ii] published jointly with Elsevier Science
- Physics in Medicine and Biology, [iii] published jointly with IoP Publishing
- Physiological Measurement, [iv] published jointly with IoP Publishing
- Journal of Medical Engineering and Technology [v] owned and published by Taylor and Francis
Planned future benefits include enhanced networking opportunities through the development of the Institute's website as a platform for electronic communications between members, including the development of interactive discussion groups in special interest areas, which will be integrated with the activities of the Science, Engineering and Technology Committee and its Special Interest Groups.
