Guidance Notes for Fellowship Applicants
RULE C:3 sets out the essential requirements for fellowship as follows
"Fellowship is a distinction grade of membership and the requirements for election are:
(i) Normally a Corporate or Incorporated Member of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine;
(ii) to have at least ten years responsible postgraduate experience, as shall satisfy Council, relevant to the application of the physical sciences and engineering to medicine or related biological sciences towards which may be counted not more than three years spent in full-time postgraduate scientific studies; and
(iii) to demonstrate evidence of a very high standard of scientific achievement or advancement of professional practice.
A very high standard of scientific achievement or professional responsibility is necessary.
Fellows may use the designatory letters FIPEM.
Further Guidance
The Institute's Council considers that a very high standard of scientific achievement or professional responsibility is necessary to justify election to the grade of Fellow. Precise requirements cannot be prescribed for the assessment of all potential applicants for transfer or election. Nevertheless, it is appropriate to provide some guidance.
A broad base of assessment will be applied. It will encompass the scientific contribution; also the importance of the work, the extent of personal responsibility and the level of professional achievement. An overall standard of excellence is required. The Council wishes to give due emphasis to, and the acknowledgement of, the importance and breadth of practising science and engineering for the benefit of the public and for its health. Consequently applications demonstrating a high standard of attainment in areas including the provision and management of services, education and training and the advancement of professional practice, as well as contributions to research and development, will be considered, where they provide satisfactory evidence of outstanding ability in the professional exploitation of science or engineering.
Corporate Members and Incorporated Members are eligible for Fellowship. Applications will be considered under three areas of professional activity:
- Research and Development
- Professional Practice in the workplace
- Professional Practice by contributions to professional body objectives
Applications for Fellowship must be proposed by two Fellows. Each proposer will be approached for a reference and must therefore have detailed professional knowledge of the candidate.
All Fellowship applications will be sent to the Chairman of the Fellowship Panel and the nine other Fellows who are members of the Fellowship Panel, for assessment.
The Fellowship Panel members will look for either:
- An outstanding contribution in one of the areas of activity
- An exceptional contribution just short of outstanding, in any two of the areas of activity, to be judged as outstanding overall
- An excellent contribution, just short of exceptional, in all three areas of activity, to be judged as outstanding overall.
Unanimous support from all assessors will result in election to Fellow. Otherwise, if a majority support acceptance, the Chair of the Membership Panel will seek to obtain a consensus opinion from the Panel. Applicants whose applications are unsuccessful may request guidance from the Chairman of the Membership Panel about actions they must take to improve the prospects of a future application being successful.
What to send
- Original + 1 copies of your Application Form
- Originals or properly authenticated copies of educational certificates (copies can be authenticated by a solicitor, a notary public, the Registrar of the issuing body or a Fellow, Corporate or Incorporated Member of the Institute who has seen the original certificates.
- Original + 1 copies of your CV or supporting information for those who have not followed a formal training route a statement in addition to the application form and CV (maximum length of 2000 words) detailing their training and experience.
