- The IUPESM Awards of Merit
- Title
The awards are called the IUPESM Awards of Merit and consist of a plaque and payment of the ex-penses for the awardees to travel to the World Congress to present an address.
- Reason
The awards recognise a Medical Physicist and a Biomedical Engineer who have established distin-guished careers respectively in Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.
- Criteria
The primary criteria for nominating Awardees are:
- The nominees should have exerted a significant impact on the science and scientific practice of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering.
- The nominees have significantly influenced the development of the professions of Medical Physics and/or Biomedical Engineering.
- The nominees' activities in national and/or international organisations for Medical Physics or Biomedical Engineering have been meritorious.
- Nominations
- Nominations may be made by IUPESM, IFMBE, IOMP, their member societies, or any indi-vidual member of the constituent societies. A Curriculum Vitae is to be submitted together with the proposal with special attention to the established criteria.
- Nominations for the biomedical engineer to be awarded must be submitted to the Chairman of the IFMBE Awards Committee, at least 12 months prior to the next World Congress.
- Selection
The IFMBE Awards Committee selects one candidate for submission to the IUPESM Awards Commit-tee through the "IFMBE Subcommittee to the IUPESM Awards Committee", 6 months prior to the next World Congress.
- Presentation
The IUPESM Awards of Merit will be awarded on the occasion of the next World Congress. The Awardees will be notified by the IUPESM Secretary General at least 4 months prior to the Congress.
- Financial
The IFMBE, IOMP and the IUPESM and the organisers of the World Congress will provide reasonable financial support for participation by Awardees in the Congress.
- The Zworykin and Otto Schmitt Awards
The selection of awardees is made by the IFMBE Awards Committee. Final approval of all award recipients shall be the responsibility of the Administrative Council.
- Awards
The awards consist of a plaque and payment of reasonable expenses for the awardees by IFMBE to travel to the World Congress to present an address.
- Nominations
- Nominations may be made by IFMBE, its member societies, or any individual member of the constituent societies. A Curriculum Vitae is to be submitted together with the proposal with special attention to the established criteria.
- Nominations must be submitted to the Chairman of the IFMBE Awards Committee, at least 12 months prior to the next World Congress.
- Selection
The IFMBE Awards Committee selects one candidate for each of the Awards, at least 6 months prior to the next World Congress, and submits the selection to the IFMBE AC for approval. Immediately after approval by the AC, the Awardees will be notified by the IFMBE Secretary General, at least 4 months prior to the Congress.
- Presentation
The Awards will be awarded on the occasion of the next World Congress.
- Financial
The IFMBE Awards Committee will request allocation of the necessary budget in the years of a World Congress.
- Membership of the IFMBE Awards Committee
The IFMBE Awards Committee consists of the IFMBE Subcommittee to the IUPESM Awards Committee* and four additional members which are appointed by IFMBE. The members of the committee shall be highly respected individuals in the biomedical engineering community, and reflect the geographical distribution of IFMBE constituent societies as far as feasible.
*According to the operating procedures for the IUPESM Awards Committee, the Subcommittee shall consist of three representatives selected by IFMBE. According to the IUPESM bylaws the Awards Committee shall consist of the Vice-President of the IUPESM who shall be the Chairman, plus two representatives from each of the Constituent Organizations.
The Members of the Committee shall be:
- The Vice-President of the IFMBE who shall be the Chair and who is an ex-officio member of the IUPESM Awards Committee.
- The remaining members of the IFMBE Subcommittee to the IUPESM Awards Committee.
- The four additional members shall be proposed by the Chair of the IFMBE Awards Committee and be approved by the President.
- Term of Appointment
The members of the IFMBE Awards Committee shall be appointed for a three-year period between regular IFMBE General Assemblies.

Committee Function, Scope and Responsibilities
- The IFMBE Awards Committee is responsible for soliciting nominations for the IUPESM Awards of Merit, the Otto Schmitt Award, and the Zworykin Award. The Committee can itself originate nominations for all three awards.
- The IFMBE Awards Committee shall be responsible with the IFMBE Subcommittee of the IUPESM Awards Committee for selecting one candidate for submission and presentation to the IUPESM Awards Committee six months prior to the next World Congress. The Committee shall prepare a citation of the qualifications of its candidate.
- The IFMBE Awards Committee shall be responsible for selecting one candidate for the Otto Schmitt Award and one candidate for the Zworykin Award for submission to the IFMBE AC six months prior to the next World Congress. The Committee shall prepare citations of the qualifica-tions of its candidates.

Responsibilities of the Chair
- The Chair of the IFMBE Awards Committee shall notify the Secretary General at least 18 months prior to the regular General Assembly session, reminding him to contact the National Secretaries requesting nominations for the different awards.
- The Chair shall solicit trough adequate publications, especially the IFMBE News, nominations for the awards.
- The Chair shall communicate with the members of the committee asking them to solicit nomina-tions.
- The Chair shall assure that all committee members take part in selecting the final nominee.
- The Chair shall submit all nominations for the IUPESM Awards of Merit to the Chairman of the IUPESM Awards Committee, at least 12 months prior to the next World Congress.
- The Chair shall present the selected candidate to the IUPESM Awards Committee, at least 6 months prior to the next World Congress.
