President's Welcome

The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine is a charity with the stated aim:

“To promote for the public benefit the advancement of physics and engineering applied to medicine and biology and to advance public education in the field”

It also fulfils many of the roles of a learned society. It publishes world-leading scientific journals and books. It organises scientific meetings and conferences to disseminate knowledge and support members in the continued development of their skills and understanding. It sets and advises on standards for the practice, education and training of scientists and engineers working in healthcare to secure an effective and appropriate workforce.

The Institute welcomes as members, scientists and engineers at all levels from industry, academia as well as public, private and charitable providers of healthcare services. Members become part of a vibrant network that supports the Institute in achieving its aims, and the healthcare community in the discovery, testing, adoption and implementation of high-quality technology-based services.

The Institute works closely with, amongst others, the Academy for Healthcare Science; The Health Professions Council; The Medical Royal Colleges; The Engineering Council and the Science Council to secure the recognition of professional and skills and competencies. It is the leading professional body representing the medical physics and biomedical engineering division of the healthcare science community within the UK.
