Student Membership

Student Membership is intended for all students, including postgraduate students who are not qualified for Associate Membership , that is, they are not in employment in clinical science, engineering or technology. It is open to any student interested in the application of physical sciences or engineering applied to medicine or related biological sciences. Student Members cannot continue as Student Members once they become eligible for Associate Membership (and enter paid employment). Their membership will either cease or they have to re-apply for Associate Membership.

Eligibility of Postgraduate Students. Those who are engaged in a taught postgraduate course or who are research students, supported only by a grant, are regarded as postgraduate students for the purposes of eligibility for Student Membership. Those who are engaged in a taught postgraduate course or in a research degree whilst in paid employment as trainee or associate clinical scientists, even though periods of postgraduate study may be full-time, are not eligible for Student Membership and, if already Student Members, must apply for upgrading to Associate Membership.

The list of Student Members will be monitored against the Institute's database to ensure that the category continues to be appropriate. Invitations to consider application for transfer to Associate Membership, following these periodic reviews, cannot guarantee that transfer will follow automatically; a decision can only be made after a detailed examination of a transfer application.

Application Process
Applicants for student membership must complete the appropriate
Student Application Form and send a copy to IPEM as specified below.  Guidelines can be downloaded here.

The following documentation is required for student membership:

  • Application Form: 1 copy required (if not submitted electronically)
  • Educational Certificates: Copies of each certificate are desirable with a paper submission but are not necessary for Student Membership. However authenticated copies of educational certificates will be required for subsequent membership applications.
  • CV & supporting information: Desirable but not essential

When an application is received it is first checked in the membership office to ensure that appropriate parts of the form have been completed and that the necessary enclosures have been received. At this stage the application is acknowledged and original certificates submitted for inspection are returned, together with a request for any deficiencies with the application or enclosures to be remedied.
